Parish Vestry
In the Episcopal Church, Parishes are governed by the Rector (Priest) and the Vestry. These persons are subject to the canons of the Episcopal Church and those canons of the Diocese in which the parish is located. Typically the local parish also has canons particular to it which give futher instruction in the governance of the parish.
At Saint Elizabeth's parish the vestry consists of 12 members elected by the congregation. One must be a confirmed member in good standing within the parish and at least 18 years old to be elected. Those elected serve 3 year terms. After serving for three years a member whose term has expired is ineligible for reelection for a period of one year. The elections are arraigned so that 4 members are elected at each annual parish meeting. This serves to stagger the expiration of terms on the vestry to allow continunity of purpose within the governance of the parish. Confirmed members in good standing who are at least 16 years old may vote in the election.
